10 unknown facts about Manohar Lal Khattar you would like to know

Chandigarh/New Delhi: Former Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh activist Manohar Lal Khattar was unanimously elected as the chief minister of Haryana. He is a first-time legislator with no experience, but known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Khattar was selected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, paving way for his becoming the non-jat chief minister of BJP’s maiden government in Haryana.

He is a 60-year-old MLA from Karnal and a first-time MLA, but his clean image is said to be the reason why BJP top brass chose him over others. Earlier, names of party spokesperson Captain Abhimanyu Singh, Rao Inderjeet Singh, Anil Vij and Ram Bilas Sharma came to the fore for the top job in the state.

Manohar Lal Khattar was born on January 1, 1954 in Rohtak’s Nigana village.

His father Harbans Lal Khattar hailed from east Punjab (now in Pakistan). He migrated to India during partition of India in 1947.

His family took to farming in Banyani village of Rohtak district.

Khattar’s father was not in favour of educating him much as he was a farmer at heart. Khattar had different ideas. He aspired to become a doctor and went on to graduate from Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government College, Rohtak.

Khattar opened a shop in Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area.

He joined RSS when he was 24-years-old.

At the age of 27, he become full-time RSS activist, in which capacity he worked for 14 years before being moved to RSS' political wing BJP in 1994.

Khattar has been the Organizational General Secretary of BJP in Haryana for 14 years.
He was the Chairman of BJP's Haryana Election Campaign Committee for 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

He won his maiden 2014 assembly elections from Karnal constituency by a margin of 63,736 votes.
